Networked Society City Index Report

By now you’ve probably started the process of, at the very least, doing some research about the depth and breadth of the challenges and issues found in urban areas.

We thought we’d give you a hand in that area by pointing you to the newly released Networked Society City Index report, produced by Ericsson in collaboration with the Stockholm School of Economics and Improvement Labs. In part 3 of this series, we continue to explore the correlation between cities’ ICT maturity and their social, economic and environmental development (known as the triple bottom line).

Browse around this page for informative videos, neat infographics and don’t forget to the check out this cool interactive city index that compares and contrasts cities based on their ICT infrastructure, readiness, and usage.

We hope this inspires you to create some really interesting apps for city life.

Guest Blog from Team HipSnip

Remember these two? It’s Phil Woodward and Jos Shepherd from Team HipSnip who won the 2011 edition of the EAA. We touched base with them last week to see what they’ve been up to since the competition. Sounds like they’ve been busy!

Here are a few words from Phil:

Phil Woodward & Jos Shepherd, winners of EAA 2011

HipSnip has had a good year in 2012.

Following winning the EAA in June 2011 HipSnip raised an initial seed round of funding to further develop their shopping Q&A app. As the product and business developed, what became clear was that there were a number of potential commercial models that could be followed, beyond focusing purely on a consumer mobile app (which can be difficult and expensive to build).

EAA2013 - What's new!

We invite student developers and those working in SMEs to participate in the competition. As always, the competition involves submitting an original Android application that has not been published elsewhere.

This year, we have made some changes to the competition to make it even better!

What’s new?
* Well, first of all, there is more prize money to be had, which is always a good thing!
* The theme for this year is “Apps for City Life” to drive innovation for the Networked Society
* The competition will be more open, so keep an eye on the campaign site for details

Before you get started, please take a look at the rules and regulations
Keep an eye out for instructions on the first stage of the competition as they will be posted soon.

Good luck!

An EAA contestant pays us a visit

We caught up with Tor Blomdell and asked him to share his experience with the EAA with you. Here's what he had to say:

Tor Blomdell

My name is Tor Blomdell and together with a friend from Lund University, participated in the first EAA competition (2010) with our application Commutity. The purpose of Commutity was to enable mobile intelligent ridesharing in order to reduce costs and CO2 emissions for individuals, organizations and the society.

Building a new business comes with great challenges from a technical, financial, as well as a market perspective. Our start-up, Commutity, was just getting off the ground when entered the 2010 Ericsson Application Awards. Through the EAA, we were able to get early feedback and market validation from real customers. We got exposure to not only vendors and investors, but also some great PR for our business. All of this lowered the time to market and provided us with some great data points for pivoting our business. Developing our business through the EAA was truly a fun experience where we got to compete with other strong entrepreneurs, something that was both inspirational and exciting.

Announcing the Start of EAA 2013!

We are now in the end of the planning phase and will announce the official launch of the competition near the end of September.

Details about rules and requirements will be posted then, but in the meantime, you can form your team and get your creative juices flowing.
